January: Drawing Techniques

The month of January, we will focus on Pencil Drawing and some Charcoal.  As we all know, drawing is the foundation of art and so we can’t ever do too much drawing in art class!  We will focus on associating shapes to create images, strokes, shading, and perspective.  For the 4 to 6 year-old class, we will focus on shapes to create images and shading.

Artist of the Month: Edgar Degas

Ballerinas Sketch by Edgar Degas

~Parents Help:
I am assigning each student to look for objects around the house that they can sketch.  They can then bring their work to class the following week and the entire month of January.  Please remind them to work on it at home whenever they have a few minutes!  I suggest they do 1 to 3 sketches but it should not take more than 10 minutes to do them.  I want them to work on feeling comfortable with loose strokes.  Also, remember to ask your kids what word they learned from the “Art Talk”, during their art session this past week!!

Note:  January is the month to invite your friends for a free 1st time art class! If any of your friends decide to enroll, you will get $10 off  February's tuition. Please let me know if you will be bringing a friend for this free session because space is limited.

As you may have noticed, I have implemented a new structure to my art classes by adding the following:

*Artist of the Month- The first 10 minutes of the class, we will be learning about one famous Artist.

*Parents Help: is a note for parents to help their kids to develop their art skill at home.

*Art Talk” will be a board we write new words used during art class on to describe specific techniques used during the process of creation.  It will expand the students' art vocabulary, and will help them express themselves in a proper way when talking about their art projects.
